On Gandhi Jayanti, Dabhoi Community Foundation (DCF) organized a meaningful learning and awareness initiative that engaged around 5,000 students across its educational spaces and centres. The programme was designed to help children understand Mahatma Gandhi's life, values, and contributions while encouraging them to share what they learned through reading, art, discussion, and public speaking.

Learning Through Reading

As part of the celebration, students participated in book-reading sessions focused on Mahatma Gandhi's life and work. Through age-appropriate stories and reading material, students learned about Gandhi's journey, his commitment to truth and non-violence, and his contribution to India's freedom movement.

The reading sessions encouraged students to explore history beyond textbooks and understand how values such as truth, simplicity, peace, discipline and service can be meaningful in everyday life.

Creativity Through Art

Students also participated in drawing and colouring activities based on Mahatma Gandhi and the themes associated with his life. They created colourful artwork featuring Gandhi, the Indian flag, the Charkha, and messages connected with peace and patriotism.

These activities provided children with an opportunity to express their understanding creatively while learning about an important chapter of India's history.

Understanding Gandhi's Contribution

Interactive sessions and speeches were conducted to introduce students to Mahatma Gandhi's role in India's national movement. Educators spoke about his principles, his approach to social change, his emphasis on truth and non-violence, and the importance of responsible citizenship.

Rather than only remembering Gandhi as a historical figure, students were encouraged to reflect on how his values can be practiced in their own lives — through honesty, kindness, respect for others, self-discipline and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Vakrut Spardha – Giving Students a Voice

A Vakrut Spardha (speech competition) was also organized, giving students a platform to speak about Mahatma Gandhi, his life, his values and his contribution to the nation.

The competition encouraged students to research, organize their thoughts and confidently present their ideas before others. For many students, it was also an opportunity to develop public-speaking skills, confidence and communication abilities.

Celebrating Values, Not Just a Day

The Gandhi Jayanti programme brought together learning, creativity and expression, allowing students to engage with the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi in different ways. From reading books and listening to discussions to creating artwork and participating in speech competitions, the activities helped make the celebration interactive and meaningful.

With the participation of approximately 5,000 students, the initiative reflected DCF's continued effort to create learning experiences that go beyond the classroom and encourage children to become thoughtful, confident and responsible citizens.

Through education, creativity and meaningful conversations, we continue to help the next generation learn from the values that shaped India's history.
